The Story Behind
Every loaf that comes out of my kitchen carries a memory. Growing up in Ghana, the smell of fresh bread drifting through the neighbourhood was a daily comfort — a signal that something warm and good was waiting. Butter bread wasn't a luxury; it was a language of care.
When I moved to Courtenay, I found myself craving that same feeling — the soft, slightly sweet pull of a fresh loaf, torn by hand and shared over conversation. I couldn't find it anywhere. So I made it myself.
This classic menu is my love letter to those mornings. Each loaf and roll is made with time, intention, and the quiet knowledge that a good bread has the power to bring people together — wherever they are from.
The Story Behind
Ghana is a land of colour and abundance — markets overflowing with mangoes, pineapples, and bananas, their fragrances mingling in the warm air. As a child, fruit wasn't just something you ate. It was a season, an occasion, a celebration.
These loaves were born from a simple question: what if bread could carry that same abundance? Each infused loaf takes the classic butter bread foundation and weaves in the brightness of West African fruits and spices — adding depth, natural sweetness, and a character you won't find anywhere else on the island.
Every flavour is a tribute to a fruit, a memory, and a place. Baked for those who appreciate something a little different — a little bolder — and entirely handmade.
The Story Behind
This collection began with a question I couldn't stop asking: how do I bake for the people I love most — the ones managing their health, watching their sugar, trying to eat well without giving up what brings them joy?
My mother Adwoa taught me that bread is love made visible. She also taught me that nourishment isn't just about what you take away — it's about what you put in. Every loaf in this collection is 100% whole wheat, sweetened entirely by fruit, and spiced with the same West African warmth that has always lived in our kitchen.
No refined sugar. No compromises on flavour. Just whole, honest bread — made for bodies that deserve both wellness and joy. This collection is dedicated to Adwoa, and to every table that deserves good bread.

About Us
Our Story
Akua's Home Bakery was born out of longing — for the smells and tastes of a Ghanaian childhood that couldn't be found on Vancouver Island. What began as baking for myself, for family, for that ache of home, quietly became something larger: a small bakery rooted in West African culinary tradition, baked with love in Courtenay, BC.
Every recipe in our collection carries a story. The Classic Butter Bread is the Ghana I grew up in. The Nourish Collection is dedicated to my mother Adwoa, who believed that food should heal as much as it delights. The Street Scrolls are the boldness of Ghanaian street food, reimagined as fusion cinnamon rolls for a new home.
We are a home-based micro-bakery — small by design, intentional in every batch. Nothing is pre-made. Nothing is frozen. Every order is baked fresh for you.
